China Star Wars Comics

You might think you have a complete Star Wars collection buy your wont until you have all the China Star Wars Comics. These comics were made from the 70s all the way to the present time. The older comics are what are known as Manhua. Manhua are small comics usually featuring one image a page with some explanation below. These were typically in black and white.

When looking at these early Manhua we see that some closely follow the movie storylines. Although it soon becomes clear that the illustrators never had seen the movie. It is like someone told them what was in the movie and they drew based on the description. For instance you can see a city that is obviously Cloud City but it does not look like the real one. Sometimes it seems they may have had some images to go off of. Other times there is no consistency even in the same comic.

The quality of the art varies. Some offer stories that are unique from the movies but probably just taken right out of the Marvel comics. There are some comics that are hard to find like the Ewoks which is based on one of the Ewok films and is in color. Another rare one is based on New Hope but has a Elizabethan look to it.

China is still making Star Wars comics. Some of these are licensed. Sadly some of these legitimate comics are then copied and you can not tell the real from the fake. The modern ones tend to be based on the modern comics and you do not see as much original or interesting content as you did in the past.

The comics are great for fans that want something truly unique. Not many of your friends will have one of these. They also are often very funny. Seeing Darth Vader as a woman with a dinosaur behind him/her is hilarious.
